What can your company learn from the Droid, iPhone, iPad? by Brett Miller
Your company’s products, services, image and proprietary business processing make your company unique. They give you the competitive advantage. In order to maintain your success, you always need to be one step ahead of the competition. This is especially true in technology. By the time you figure out what your competition is doing, it may be too late.
So where should you be looking to figure out how your company should change? What information do you need to have continuously accessible? How should you modify your business process and supporting custom software and marketing campaigns?
The tool that gives you the answer may be right in your hand. You’ve probably guessed already, it’s the Smartphone (iPhone and Droid) or the Mobile Tablet (iPad). Their use of the Internet, GPS, Bluetooth, Downloadable Apps, Cameras, Video, Tilt Recognition, Voice and Social Networking is beyond amazing. The trickle down of influence on your business is already happening.
In this article I’ll outline how cutting edge technologies are being used and combined to create innovate functionality in the smartphones and mobile tablets. I will leave it up to you to determine how your company can incorporate these concepts into your business to maintain a competitive edge.
Photo: Using my Droid, I can now take a picture of a product or of a bar code (on the product) and my phone will recognize the product and instantly search for prices from other vendors and reviews for that product online. I can even see ancillary product and other similar ones I should be considering.
Say it or Record it: When a song comes on the radio, I simply enable my mic to listen for a few moments to compare it to an online database of music. Instantly, I’ll have the title, artist and a link to buy the song.
As far as searching, I can simply tell my phone what I would like to look for. The speech recognition system has come a long way and is now very accurate.
GPS: Searches are now taken in context with my GPS position. Navigation with pictures of Street Views is just one click away. I simply press the speech recognition button and say “Best Buy” and poof! The directions to the nearest store begin.
I can also keep track of family members using their GPS.
My exercise program now records facts about my routine: speed, distance, elevation changes, route and I can share this information instantly with friends.
Wireless Reading Device: paperless books & magazines.
Driving Mode: My phone can read me the emails and text messages as they come in, without me needing to click a single button.
Virtual World: Using my video on the phone I can scan (as an example) a building and (in combination with the GPS) it can tell me, which, apartments are for rent.
Tilt recognition: for gaming playing and viewing the Virtual World (example above).
Voicemails: converted to text so I can simply read the message that was left to me. Virtual phone numbers that ring all your phones and allow you to keep your real number private.
Easy access / integration to Social Networking: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and a million others.
Remote Control of my home computer
My Smartphone and my iPad are such great devices, I can now throw away my GPS, my Guitar tuner, old handheld electronic games, my portable mp3 player, my digital voice recorder, my old digital camera, my old books, plus many other things.
Ah, but the real question is how will these technologies affect your companies online presence, marketing, custom business processes and custom applications? What feature do you need to incorporate to stay on top? It’s your turn … I’m listening … as I’m trying to answer these same questions for my company, Custom Software by Preston.
