All too often that point is much later in life after the children have gone off to make their own homes and at last we find some time and maybe a little money to spend doing those very personal things we have always wanted to do for ourselves.

The excitement of choosing and buying your first guitar is as enjoyable for us older kids as it most certainly is for any teenager. The issue that so often comes after this happy event though is that once the initial burst of enthusiasm subsides a frustration moves in as we discover that actually playing this wonderful new guitar isn’t quite as easy as we had thought!

What options do we have? If we are talking guitar lessons for kids still at school then perhaps there is a resident music teacher at the school giving guitar tuition for free. If there is then that must be as good a place as any to start. If not, then the search goes on to find a local guitar teacher who is competent, affordable and of course, trustworthy.

Typically a half hour private lesson will cost about $35 a session. To make any real progress that will need to be one a week every week for perhaps a year or more. So a dollar commitment of $1600 a year is likely.

Of course you could try guitar lessons for kids out of a book. However a book or a video is unlikely to take anyone, let alone a youngster very far. After an initial burst of enthusiasm, nine people out of ten will park that book or video in a cupboard for ever more. End of lessons. Money wasted.

So where do you find guitar lessons for kids that are affordable, enjoyable, engaging and that actually take the would be guitarist from a standing start through to being perhaps an accomplished player?
